See the light in others and treat them as if that is all that you see.
— Dr. Wayne Dyer
Leadership
I’m a catalyst for your best life.
I work with “all-inners” — people doing something with their lives.
A lot of people approach leadership coaching using well-known and respected assessments. In some ways that’s smart because it creates a simple, marketable product. The Enneagram, Myers-Briggs, Via Character — all are valuable and I’m familiar with these and more. However, my approach is different.
The deeper work starts after you’ve taken personality and strengths tests. I help you to take these clues to your character further. We’ll build clarity on where you want to go next.
Who Can You as a Leader Look To?
Leaders are surrounded by people who tell them what they want to hear. I don’t do that. I’ll ask you and get to what’s really going on.
I’m able to work with leaders who don’t have anyone to talk to. As a leader, you’re the “last stop” so where do you go to get a different perspective? Where do you go to sift through your thoughts, beliefs, state of mind and to find where some of your blind spots are lurking? You go to me. I don’t have to be a subject matter expert in your business because I’m an expert in asking the right questions and in listening carefully to what you’re saying — not only what you’re saying but also your body language — and calling you on yourself.
Time for a Fierce Conversation
A polished woman I worked with who was well known in her field set off my BS detector. I said, “That sounds really good but what’s really going on?” A 45-second silence ensued and all of a sudden she couldn’t hold it in any more. I knew there was something beneath that surface that was dying to come out and it wasn’t just because she was polished; all my training allows me to sense things beneath the surface (on the inside, not just the outside).
All of a sudden, all this stuff came out. She’s got an image to maintain so she tried to keep it hidden but that’s not what moves you forward. So how does somebody like that grow? You have to have someone you can trust, who will ask you tough questions and have fierce conversations with you.
You might have to negotiate in a lot of different ways; you have to be able to communicate effectively and to tell stories powerfully, so all of my subject matter expertise is rolled into working with leaders. Asking what’s going on from a place of love opens up amazing possibilities.
Great Leaders Seek to Constantly Improve
Even the best leaders have areas they can improve upon. A lot of the time, as a leader you don’t want to show that weak spot.
If you’ve got a big vision, you’re going to face big challenges.
I’ll ask questions that may not be fun or easy to ask. But I know you need to hear them and I know you need to dig to answer them.
Connection, rapport, feeling “gotten” at a deep level, knowing I care — not because of trying to get something from you but because I really care — allows for vulnerability.
Vulnerability is a sign of courage and a lot of us weren’t taught that. Knowing you have a safe space to be vulnerable will allow for growth that’s needed to become the best leader you can be.
Let’s Find Your Blind Spots
There are some people I worked for who I would do anything for. Some you’ll do just what you have to and other you don’t care what they want you to do. Those seeming intangible qualities are the keys to good leadership. So this is why we dig for your blind spots.
I’ll give you multiple different perspectives to look from. I pull from a lot of different resources; my experience with John Maxwell, Brene Brown and Jack Canfield, among others.
From the Boardroom to the Living Room
How do you leverage what you learn in business also in your personal life? For all personality types, there’s a healthy version and an unhealthy version. As you grow and gain awareness, you can shift.
If you’re not using your strengths consistently in your daily work, you’re not going to be happy. You could win awards but still be unhappy and sometimes not know why.
Just because you’ve achieved great things doesn’t mean you’re done.
We’ll unravel what you already know but have blocks in the way of true clarity or you don’t feel safe or you only feel you can share so much with your mastermind group. I’m here to go deeper.
For Success and Leadership, You Need Clarity, Clarity, Clarity.
A lot of leadership is about clarity. Clarity from the inside out, not just a mission statement. The clarity of knowing what’s blocked you, what you’re facing, what’s the potential challenge for you in fulfilling your mission and vision.
You need to build awareness and plan ahead for problems. Let’s say you’ve got 100 apartment buildings you want to build. Zoning issues, governmental issues to be faced — those are real. Let’s outline them and see what they are. The person who has a plan and outlines potential problems is going to be successful. What are your plans in place for those problems?
Clarity and Awareness Spill into Other Life Areas
A target pushes out and affects all other areas of your life so that you can become a better, friend, spouse, father, daughter, etc. If I help you in one area, I get excited because I know it’s going to widen your effectiveness in other areas of your life.
You’ll reach more people which means you’ll make more money and have greater influence. You’ll be a better role model.
When people work with me they become better versions of themselves.
If you’re not aligned in the rest of your life, you’re really not that great a leader. When we work on what blocks you — maybe it’s a values conflict — working too many hours and not knowing how to also spend time with family — maybe it’s taking a block of time and committing it to your core values. It takes courage. It’s “yes and” not “either or” — ditch trying to be superwoman.
A lot of leaders are like a raging bull that charges forward. I’m like the guy in the red cape who sidesteps and dances with the bull. I lead by influence. Typical leaders are drivers.
A lot of hard charging people need somebody who will put them in check. There’s a mutual respect for leadership in different styles.
I like working with leaders because I know the effect we create will multiply out to the thousands of people you’re going to affect.
To be Successful, Be Open
The best teachers are great learners. If you want to be a great coach, be coachable. If you want to be a great persuader, be persuadable. If you want to be a great leader, be willing to be led.
